چکیده

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the genus Plasmodium such as Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum), Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium malariae. Among them, P. falciparum is the parasite responsible for most severe diseases and fatal cases, which may kill over one millions of people per annum. The parasite, P. falciparum is genetically diverse and has multiple independent origins of mutations in genes that confer resistance to widely used antimalarial drugs like chloroquine[1]. A major breakthrough of the past decades is the discovery of artemisinin by Chinese researchers. Artemisinin combination treatments for P. falciparum are currently used only first line antimalarial drugs ameanable to widespread use against all chloroquinone resistant malarial parasites. However, artemisinin resistant strains were recently found in Cambodia[2]. So, there is an urgent need for the new antimalarial drugs. Living organisms are recognized as a source of potential bioactive molecules PEER REVIEW ABSTRACT

In vitro antiplasmodial activity and toxicity assessment of plant extracts used in traditional malaria therapy in the Lake Victoria Region.

As part of our program screening the flora of the Lake Victoria Region, a total of 54 organic extracts from seven plant families (8 species) were individually tested for antiplasmodial activity against chloroquine-sensitive [Sierra Leone (D-6)] and chloroquine-resistant [Vietnam (W-2)] strains. Only 22% of these extracts exhibited very high in vitro antiplasmodial activity. Six methanol (MeOH) ...

Synthesis and study of effects of new 4-chloro – amodiaquine analogues against two resistant and sensitive forms to chloroquine Plasmodium Falciparum, in vitro

Background: Resistance to chloroquine (CQ) in Plasmodium falciparum malaria has become a major health concern of the developing countries. This resistance has prompted a re-examination of the pharmacology of alternative antimalarials that may be effective against resistant strains. Amodiaquine (AQ) is a 4-aminoquinoline antimalarial which is effective against many chloroquine-resistant strains o...

Naghibione; A Novel Sesquiterpenoid with Antiplasmodial Effect from Dorema hyrcanum Koso-Pol. Root, a Plant Used in Traditional Medicine

Some Dorema species are used in Persian traditional medicine. In the present study the total extract from the roots of Dorema hyrcanum Koso-Pol. was investigated for its in vitro (pLDH assay) and in vivo (Peters’ 4-days suppressive test) antiplasmodial effects and assessed for cytotoxicity against the normal cell line MDBK (MTT test). The IC50 values for a chloroquine- sensitive (3D7) and a chl...
